Experiencing the sciences outside of school - holds a very special
charm for many children and adolescents. Since the end of the 90ies, so-called learning laboratories
have opened their doors in over 200 universities, research institutes, science centres, museums and
industry in Germany in order to give children and adolescents the opportunity of accessing, trying
out and understanding science.
Lernort Labor (LeLa) sees itself as a centre for advice and quality development. The task of
our committed colleagues is primarily to be seen in the support of the mathematical-science-technological
extracurricular locations. LeLa advices, informs, evaluates and links the extracurricular activities
with the aim of intensifying their potential effect, of securing their continuation and of enabling
their long-term establishment in the education system.

Learning laboratories have an encouraging effect! They possess an enormous
innovation potential and impressively show how our frequently critisized education system can take new
roads in science instruction. The direct contact which children and adolescents can have with scientists
in a learning laboratory makes it possible to transfer knowledge and methods of modern research to
instruction quickly and unconventionally. This is a success that can be proven: Students' interest in
the sciences is sustained by a visit to a learning laboratory. Both boys and girls are equally attracted
to it and this is all the more surprising since physics and chemistry are considered to be the most
unpopular subjects in the school.

This positive effect of extending and promoting learning laboratories is Lela's business.
Together with partners from the sectors of foundations, politics and economy, Lela will contribute to a
multitude of synenergy effects in our education system.
